INTRODUCTION:

Termonfeckin cemetery is situated in the centre of Termonfeckin village, 7 km north-east of Drogheda, Co. Louth. It is a graveyard of great antiquity and would have been established with the monastic settlement of St. Fechin, which was founded in the 7th century.
The first written account of the cemetery is in one of the Dowdall deeds dating from the 5th January 1321, when “…. A burgage in the vill of Tarmafechyn…. lying by the land of Nicholas Brabeccun, W(est) and the graveyard of St. Fecchyn, E(ast)…was granted to a William and Emmota Arnold. It is recorded that at least one of the Primates of Armagh, John Prene, was buried in the cemetery precincts in 1443, while John Del Palatio, a subdeacon of Armagh, was interred there in 1504. A remnant of his tomb survived until the late 19th century. An unusual event occurred in 1518 when a Donatus Smyth of Termonfeckin, being found guilty of perjury was, for his sins, ordered to walk around the cemetery on six different Sundays dressed in white linen!
Burials continued down through the centuries and by 1937 a health and sanitary report had noted that Termonfeckin cemetery “adjoins (the) Protestant church and is under Church body. Well kept. Some of the Catholic graves are filled but there is space available on the Protestant side. Graves and paths neat and tidy.”
Celebrating the ‘Patrun’ or ‘Blessing of the Graves’ on the 15th August was re-established by Fr. Rogers around 1950 and a clean up of the graveyard commenced at that time. However areas of the cemetery remained overgrown and it was not until 1982 that St. Fechin’s football club volunteers commenced a full-scale restoration. Jim Garry from the Old Drogheda Society transcribed the cemetery that year and returned in 1989 to undertake additional field work.

The following transcription of the headstones commenced in late August 2002 and was completed in the middle of July 2003, with dates of death noted to April of that year.
In an undertaking of this character and extent, and despite several rechecks, errors will undoubtedly occur. In the event of this happening, responsibility lies with the author. It is hoped that if any arise or are noted by family members etc. that the author will be notified accordingly.

The following are the ten oldest recorded dates of death in the graveyard:
William Brabazon    - 1714      Patrick Taaffe        - 1755
Cristophilus Jenney - 1741      Jane Devany          - 1756
Elizabeth Brabazon - 1743      John Wynne           - 1761
Elizabeth Lambert   - 1745      Vincentia Townley  - 1763
Henery Sock Smith - 1753      James Sheridon      - 1765

TRANSCRIPTION NOTES:
  1. Surnames are in alphabetical order with the first surname inscribed on the headstone determining the order. When the same surname re-occurs strict chronological order is used, with the first inscribed date of death determining the sequence. Headstones with no inscribed date are next in order. More than one of the same undated surname is listed in first name alphabetical order. Last in the sequence are cross-referenced surnames.
  2. Capital letters are used in the first letter of names, surnames (including the convention of two capitals in a Mc/Mac surname), rank or title, months, addresses and the start of new sentences - even if not shown on the inscription.
  3. For legibility purposes, the occasional full stop or comma is used, even though not on the inscription.
  4. All additional notes and descriptions are in bracketed italics.
  5. All placenames and addresses on inscriptions are in Bold lettering.
  6. Square brackets [ ] are used where a figure or letter is indistinct. Round brackets ( ) indicate brackets in the inscription itself.  Three dots … indicate an illegible letter, figure or word, while a space __  refers to a space in the inscription which was not inscribed.
  7. Memorials with crosses or other marks but with no specific lettering etc. were not listed. Temporary crosses marking recent burials were not listed.
  8. Unless containing separate details (e.g. different surname) from the main h/stone, additional memorial objects in an enclosure were not recorded.
  9. The townland of Betaghstown is recorded on numerous occasions throughout the cemetery; and with several variations of spelling including: Betaghstown, Bethagstown, Betystown, Bettystown, Ballyvathy & Belaveathy. All of these refer to the same townland area south-west of Termonfeckin village.
